Andy Start

Andy leads the Capita Public Service business, one of the largest strategic supplies to the UK Government.  He leads a team of over 14,000 staff who enable clients across government globally to deliver better outcomes for citizens, at a lower cost to taxpayers.

Trained as an engineer, Andy spent the first decade of his working career in the space business, as a designer and programme manager of increasingly innovative and complex satellite systems.  His career progressed to leading global technology businesses with a specialism in helping businesses through strategic transformation. His roles have included: Business Unit Director of Airbus’ military space business; CEO of the software business IFS Defence; Managing Director of BAE Systems Avionics; President of Harris Tactical Radio; President of Inmarsat Global Government and now CEO of Capita Government Services.

Andy has completed two government secondments, into MOD and the then Department of Trade and Industry with responsibility for leading the UK Aerospace Innovation & Growth Team. He has been active throughout his career in supporting others and served on the UK Electronics Council, the board of the trade body TechUK and the board of Smart Africa, and is an active coach and mentor.  He has been Chairman of the Medway Innovation Centre and was also Chairman of MidKent College from 2009 to 2020, a large Further Education College which delivers the artisan training for the Royal Engineers through its subsidiary MidKent Training Services.

In addition to an undergraduate degree from Portsmouth, Andy studied management at Bournemouth, Oxford Said, Harvard, and Wharton.  He also recently completed a year at the Royal College of Defence Studies and his Masters in International Security and Strategy at King’s College, London.

Outside of work, Andy lives in Kent with his wife Alison. They have three adult children.  He loves to travel and enjoys participating in multiple sports, including running, mountain biking, and sailing.
